Summary: Love stems from a bohemian life... Carmen : a scandal in its time! The main character is a bohemian who indulges in her freedom and in her love, so much so that when it originally opened, the opera was harshly criticized. Despite precautions taken in order to weaken the arguments of its critics (notably the introduction of Micaela, a more reserved feminine character), the opera's indecencies still shocked its public. Even Bizet's music couldn't escape the harsh reactions which claimed his Wagner inspired compositions lacked melody; though today the famous music has found a place in the consciousness of most ( Habanera, Séguedille, etc.). |
