Summary: The genius of humble beginnings... Schubert was the third and last of Vienna's most popular classical musicians (after Haydn and Mozart). Franz Schubert was the son of a teacher and an ex-servant; he learned music with the official organist at his local parish. At age 13 he composed his first works, and he sang alto in a family quartet, with his father at the cello. These were major steps in his adolescence which was, despite the loss of his mother in 1812, a relatively happy one. Schubert was not an ambitious man, though he did attempt to conquer Vienna with his theatrical productions. He lived a poor life, more or less forgoing reality to live in a dreamland, fully aware of his talent (he admired Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven) in part thanks to the circle of close friends that supported him. Schuberts lifework is astoundingly significant: 900 opus pieces, 15 operas including the famed Rosamunde D 797, and over 600 leiders; a range of chamber music compositions, with 16 quartets, a Quintet in la major known as the Trout D 667, numerous violin/piano sonatas, 22 piano sonatas, piano pieces, the 1822 Wanderer Fantasie D 760, 8 impromptus and countless dances... |
