- Jean-Baptiste Olive: Prism of Light - |
Summary: The Master of colour... Jean-Baptiste Olive (July 31st, 1848, in Marseille - 1936) was a water-colour painter; his palette of talents stretches from landscapes to marine decors, still life to nature scenes. He was one of the first to focus his work on the intensity of colour and light when depicting the sea under a midday sun, a trait which made his reputation. Olive began his career as a graphic artist and decorator, working in Paris at the Cirque d'hiver, the Sacré Coeur, and a number of pavilions of the 1899 World Fair. His real career, as an artist, began in 1870 at the time of his first personal exhibition in Paris. The artist favoured blue, violet or deep green in his vision of the ocean, all depending on the time of day, the weather, the position of rocks and the character of the sun's light at the time. |
