Organised under the patronage of the UEFA, the League of Champions is the most prestigious of Europe's cups, the battlefield where the top clubs of the Old World can wage war...
The competition brings together three or four of the best clubs from every national chapmpionship. To start with, the qualifying rounds involve eight groups of four teams, with two victors per group who make it to the next round.
The finals usually take place in May on predetermined neutral ground. The winner of this competition can then play against the winner of the UEFA Cup, and then the FIFA Club World Cup, where the best clubs battle it out for the title of best club on planet earth... This is, as you can see, no small affair...
Real Madrid has held the record for this competition for a while, with a total of nine victories, followed by Milan AC, Liverpool, Bayern Munich and Ajax Amsterdam. The OM, Marseille's team, is the only French club to have won the League of Champions back in 1933...
