Summary: A masterpiece of the Russian master
The Nut-Cracker is a two-act ballet in three movements and 15 scenes. It was initially presented in December, 1892 at the Marinsky Theater in Saint Petersburg, directed by Riccardo Drigo with a choreography signed Lev Ivnov.
The libretto, signed Ivan Vsevolozhskii and Marius Petipa, was inspired by the Alexander Dumas' version of Hoffmann's Der Nussknacker und Mausekönig (The Nutcracker and the Mouse King). The music, courtesy of Tchaikovsky, was composed between February 1891 and March 1892. The music has made this ballet one of the most popular in the world and one of Tchaikovsky's most appreciated works, even if he doubted that Nutcraker would go on to have any success. He arranged a suite comprised of eight numbers from the break. It was played under the direction of the composer March 7-19, 1892 just before the premier of the complete ballet.
The suite for the ballet, op. 77a, includes: the The Overture, The March, The Sugar Plum Dance, The Russian Dance, The Arabian Dance, The Chinese Dance, The Dance of the Reeds et The Waltz of the Flowers.
The music was used in the Disney film Fantasia. In August 1892, Tchaikovsky arranged the break for the piano. |
