Summary: The unmissable centre of European art.
Former medieval château and palace of the kings of France, the Louvre has been a museum for more than two hundred years since it was founded by the Republic in 1793. The Louvre's permanent collections are organised into seven departments and provide visitors with an encyclopaedic view of art, displaying works dating from the birth of the great ancient civilisations of the Mediterranean to western civilisation, and from the High Middle Ages to the first half of the 19th century. When you visit, after viewing the Mona Lisa, do not miss going to see one of the most recent architectural metamorphoses on the site. The glass pyramid designed by I. M. Peï was built in 1989 in the centre of the main courtyard, Cour Napoléon, in front of the Jardins des Tuileries. This new part of the museum has enabled a new distribution between the rooms used for temporary exhibitions, the auditorium and the moats of Charles V. |
