Summary: A place packed with history
The Conciergerie and the Sainte-Chapelle constitute the remains of the oldest royal palace in Paris, the Palais de la Cité, which was made into a prison in the 15th century.
On the site that was the residence of Roman rulers and then the first Capetians, Philippe le Bel had a palace built in the early 14th century as a symbol of his power, described at the time as one of the most magnificent palaces of the Middle Ages.
At the end of the 14th century, the Capetian Kings deserted the Palais de la Cité and moved to the Louvre and to Vincennes, leaving the Paris Parliament and the central government of the kingdom to occupy the palace.
The Concierge (from whom we get the name 'Conciergerie'), was appointed by the king to maintain order, manage the police and register prisoners. He transformed part of the building into a prison.
In the part of the building that was used during the Terror, a series of cells, including that of Marie-Antoinette, have been reconstructed.
The 'Girondins' chapel, the Chapelle Expiatoire and the women's courtyard are further poignant reminders of the revolutionary period in France.
