Summary: One of the most striking monuments in Paris.
Located at the top of the Montagne Sainte-Geneviève in the heart of the Latin Quarter, the Pantheon is one of the most striking monuments in Paris. Indeed, for most of the 19th century, before the Eiffel Tower, the Sacré-Coeur and the Montparnasse Tower were built, it was the most distinctly Parisian building, a symbol of the city. Originally called the Basilica of Sainte-Geneviève and rechristened the Pantheon during the French Revolution, it's a magnificent example of late 18th-century architecture and is steeped in history. The Pantheon represents, as one scholar of the Enlightenment put it, a combination of the lightness of the construction of Gothic buildings and the purity and magnificence of Greek architecture. The masterpiece of the architect Soufflot, the Pantheon is the very soul of the Latin Quarter. Notable features include the famous dome and the sumptuous interior decoration, a fascinating amalgam of Christian and Republican symbols. The paintings in the nave reflect the artistic syncretism of the 3rd Republic (particularly those by Puvis de Chavanne). The building is also famous as a resting place for distinguished writers, scientists, generals, men of the cloth and statesmen.
