Summary: A symbol of French history. Standing proudly at the end of the Champs-Elysées, the most beautiful avenue in the world, the Arc de Triomphe is not only a symbol of Paris but, for the French, a symbol of history. Over fifty meters high, the roof of the monument affords spectacular views of Paris. Building began in 1806: Napoleon I wanted to erect a monument in honor of the French army. Thirty years later the arch was finished, during the reign of Louis Philippe. A monument to French Republican values, the arch has witnesses some of the most important events in French history: the restoration of the Empire in 1840, the burial of Victor Hugo in 1885, the victory procession of the French army in 1919 and 1944. After visiting the flame over the tomb of the unknown soldier, why not go up to the top of the arch and watch the sunset over the City of Lights? |
