Notre-Dame Cathedral |
Summary: Come and visit one of the most famous cathedrals in France.
In the 12th century, bishop Maurice de Sully considered replacing the former 6th-century Romanesque church of St Etienne with a Gothic cathedral - construction began in 1163 and was completed by 1250. A number of additions and modifications were subsequently made: in the mid-13th century, the transept crossings were built by Jean de Chelles and Jean de Montreuil (who was also the architect of the Saint Chapelle).
Between the mid-13th and early 14th century, Pierre de Montreuil designed some of the chapels between the buttresses of the nave. The Gothic cathedral underwent extensive remodeling in the 18th century and was severely damaged during the French Revolution.
Restoration work took place in 1864 and it is this final construction stage that resulted in the face of the cathedral we see today. Architects Jean-Baptiste Lassus and Viollet-le-Duc tried to recapture the style of original 12th-century cathedral and added sculpture, furnishings and stained glass windows.
These various aspects together helped consolidate the prestigious status that this cathedral has today acquired. It is now one of the most popular sights in Paris: highlights include the south portal of the west façade, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, a masterpiece of Gothic sculpture, and paintings by Le Brun and Jouvenet which were commissioned for every 1st of May between 1630 and 1707 (which is why they are known as the Mays).
