Gardens of the Palais-Royal |
Summary: A great place to stroll and soak up history, or just people-watch
In 1634, after Charles V knocked down the wall around Paris, Cardinal Richelieu asked his architect, Jacques Lemercier, to build a palace and garden near the Louvre. The palace was first called the Palais Cardinal before being rechristened the Palais Royal or royal palace (the cardinal donated it to the crown in 1636). It became the residence of the Orléans family in 1661 and was the seat of power during the Regency period (1715-1723). The main building, situated opposite the Louvre, was completed and remodeled by Contant d'Ivry in the 18th century and then by Fontaine a century later. The theater (currently the Théâtre français), was rebuilt in 1791 after being destroyed by fire several times. In 1780 Louis-Philippe d'Orléans (the future Philippe-Egalité), then in considerable financial difficulty, made extensive additions to the palace, ordering Victor Louis to build three wings alongside the garden. These were turned into apartment buildings with shops on the ground floor. The Palais Royal became one of the Parisians' favorite places for strolling, and was briefly a hotbed of revolutionary unrest. During the Directory (1795-1799), it became a notorious den of iniquity, frequented by gamblers and women of easy virtue. As soon as Louis-Philippe succeeded to the throne he put a stop to the immoral activities of the palace; it consequently became much less popular. In the interwar period, extensive changes took place: the Orléans gallery, which acted as a screen between the palace and garden, was pulled down and replaced by a colonnade. The artist Daniel Buren recently added some columns.
