Summary: A small architectural wonder
Just around the corner from the bustling district of Printemps, Galeries Lafayette and the Saint-Lazare station, the Square Louis XVI boasts a small architectural wonder set in the midst of trees and flowerbeds: La Chapelle Expiatoire.
Louis XVIII had the chapel built in memory of Louis XVI and Queen Marie-Antoinette, between 1816 and 1826, by the architect Fontaine.
It stands on the spot where the king and queen were buried after being beheaded on January 21 and October 16 1793, in what was at the time the Madeleine cemetery.
The building is comprised of an entrance which leads to an interior courtyard made of the soil accumulated after the old cemetery was excavated.
At the other end, the chapel rises majestically from the steps with its columns and pediment.
Visitors will be fascinated by the contrasting architecture, where the severity of the shapes blends in with the intimacy of the setting.
The place has a feeling of contemplation mixed with melancholy, corresponding perfectly with the purpose of the monument.
It is undoubtedly this understanding between architecture and memory that led Chateaubriand to say that this was the most remarkable monument in Paris.
