Summary: A chapel that houses relics of Christ.
The Sainte-Chapelle was built during the second half of the 13th century by King Louis IX, who would later become Saint Louis, to house the relics of Christ's Passion. Decorated with a unique set of fifteen stained-glass windows and a large rose window that form veritable walls of light, the Sainte-Chapelle is the jewel of French Gothic architecture. In 1239, after two years of negotiations and in exchange for a considerable sum, Louis IX bought Christ's crown of thorns from Baldwin II, Emperor of Constantinople. In 1241, he purchased more relics from Byzantium and it was then he decided to build a monument worthy of housing such a treasure within the Palais de la Cité. In addition to its awe-inspiring stained-glass windows, the Sainte-Chapelle is decorated with murals that were faithfully restored in the 19th century and sculptures that are remarkable for their artfulness and variety. The splendour of its architecture and décor and the rituals attached to the cult of its relics influenced all artistic and liturgical creation up to the 16th century. |
