Summary: Contemporary art in a striking contemporary space.
The Cartier Foundation was created in 1984 by Alain Dominique Perrin. Far more than just a patronage, the centre has rapidly become one of the most important centres of contemporary creation in France.
For ten years the foundation has been situated on Boulevard Raspail in a now renowned building designed by architect Jean Nouvel.
The space is made of glass and metal and is totally transparent and achieves the tricky task of combining vast exhibition spaces with six floors of offices.
Two glass walls run parallel with the boulevard and allow passers-by a view of the garden behind.
The blend of glass, metal and natural materials is what makes the structure so striking.
The exhibition spaces are flexible enough to allow artists to make the space their own.
Five exhibitions take place every year and feature work from painters, film-makers, designers, photographers and fashion designers.
