Death Rites in Alsace from Prehistory to the late 19th century |
Summary: Rites of ultimate passage in Alsace. Death rites are a dark and complex aspect of human society and to explore them is to be confronted our own existential fears - death has evolved throughout history and there are constants, shifts and divergences in the everlasting notion of the funereal ceremony. With a significant archeological heritage, numerous traditions and customs, an open-minded religion and society and a particularly rich ceremonial culture, the Alsace region provides a propitious historical framework to learn of the complex manners in which humans have learned to deal with death. This exhibition reveals a great deal about humanity and its ultimate fear, from prehistory to the late 19th century. The protohistoric butte, the antique necropolis, the medieval simplicity of a church blessing, the undertakers of the baroque period, the romanticist notion of death and the vast urban necropolies of the 19th century - these ceremonies and customs, present in all stages of our history, reveal how man strove to ritualise, in order to better cope with, the inevitable quietus. |
