Hotel Information

The Hotel de France is an original and historic Relais du Post or Coaching Inn dating back to 1578 and as such is the oldest hotel and restaurant in Montreuil sur mer.
Victor Hugo based the Coaching Inn in his play Les Miserables on the Hotel de France and "The Master of the House" and "Cosette" characters were set in this Coaching Inn.
Victor Hugo had room12b as his room at the hotel. This original room overlooks the courtyard and is at the top of the entrance stairway.
Gerard Depardieu stayed in the hotel for many months while filming in the area and Mel Smith was a guest giving the Hotel de France its unique character description - " A Place of Sleep and Dreams".
The Hotel de France and its restaurant Le Relais du Roy where used during the war as operational headquarters by Field Marshall Haig and it is reputed that the body of the unknown soldier was chosen in the courtyard.
The Hotel de France has always been a warm, welcoming Travellers Inn, where interesting people meet other like minded people in a convivial and personal atmosphere frequently around the bar which is always open until late in the evening.
Spontaneous Late, late night hat parties are a frequent occurence and are facilitated by a huge selection of hats, wigs and masks of every description.
The huge ballroom, original used for Thé Danson, is now the venue for functions from dinner dance parties with a French Beatles tribute band to sit down wedding receptions to 50th birthday dinners and even opera.

The Relais du Roy restaurant is reknown for its quality french cuisine and served in summer in the beautiful cobbled and flower garden courtyard of the hotel.

Surrounding Area

Situated in the centre of Montreuil sur mer the Hotel de France is located very close to many of the local golf courses( Le Touquet; Belle Dune; Hardelot; Wimereau; St Omer).
Also the Valley de la Course and Authie rivers are in close proximity.
The rivers offer the opportunity daily picnics floating down the river and lunching on the river banks.
Less than 50 minutes from Calais and 20minutes from Boulogne and approximately 2hours from Paris, Montreuil is very accessible.

The Hotel de France provides catering for every possible function from Wedding receptions to sit down black tie dinners and has full facilities for elegant dining in an exciting and surreal surrounding.
The hotel restaurant, Le Relais du Roy, is situated across the courtyard from the hotel and although run seperately from the hotel is able to provide catering to the hotel and give special preference to hotel guests.
The restaurant serves traditional French cuisine and has 3 menus. An A'la Carte; 35 ? and 19.5? menu as well as a childrens and Formule option.
