Dinan
You will certainly never forget visiting Dinan, as it is one of the most beautiful towns in Brittany. Full of history, Dinan has withstood many attacks over the centuries. Medieval Dinan offers a trip back through time inviting you to put your feet in the shoes of Bertrand Duguesclin, Duchess Anne, Chateaubriand and Auguste Pavie. Travel back to the heart of the Middle Ages and walk alongside the ramparts, belfry, churches, convents, and timber framed houses.
In the 14th century, Duguesclin beat Thomas of Cantorbery in single armed combat at the Champ-clos square. During the 18th century, the rich Dinannaise bourgeoisie built spectacularly luxurious and beautiful residences on rue de la Poissonnerie, de la Lainerie, Grand'rue and Place du champs. These names evoke the image of a rich and friendly trade town. You will still find the atmosphere from this era living on in the heart of the town today. Dinon charms visitors every season with narrow alleyways that served as passageways to the squares and markets, renaissance hotels, convents, chapels, monuments and houses.
Located on the hillside, 75 metres above the Rance River, Dinan proudly displays the finest architectural heritage in Brittany including 2700m of ramparts, 14 defence and watch towers, 4 monumental gates, and an enormous Donjon built especially for Duke Jean IV. The port gives shelter to numerous sailors and the discrete charms of the Rance’s banks attract many walkers and cyclists.
Why not discover the charm of the river by taking a riverboat cruise… Once past the old bridge of Dinan, you will find the viaduct, inaugurated in 1852 by Napoleon III. On the left bank there is a tow path and a path used by tractors of yesteryear, horses, donkeys, mules…. Next comes the Léhon lock where the lockkeeper will be waiting « turn, turn the crank handle” Explore the village of Léhon built in Roman times, Léhons old port and the Gallo-Roman road from Rennes to Corseul.
