Basilica of Sacré-Coeur
Looking like a white wedding cake on the hill of Montmartre. It is the best ever sold postcard in France or anywhere else. With its Romano-Bysantine style, inspired by oriental churches such as Hagia Sopha in Istanbul or San Marco in Venezia, the Sacré-Cœur basilica is THE must of French tourism.
The building was started in 1875 and only completed in 1914. At that time, the bell tower was already hosting the great, bell called « la Savoyarde » weighing some 19 tons. World War 1 delayed its consecration until 1919. It then became a new place of pilgrimage for the Christian community.
From the top of the high hill (la Butte), this internationally known symbol offers a great panoramic view.
