Constituées à l'origine par les saisies révolutionnaires en 1794 , enrichies en 1842 des collections de Melle Cuiret, puis des collections Doucet et d'Houdetot. En 1898, la donation du baron Alexandre Gérard (petit-neveu du peintre François Gérard) a permis l'installation définitive du musée dans l'ancien évêché, considérablement agrandi et remanié en 1967.
