Description
Located 1.5 km from the village of Gordes, on the slopes of the Monts de Vaucluse, the village of Bories, listed as historical monument since 1977, is a veritable outdoor museum. This village, comprising some thirty dry stone huts, reflects a popular ancestral and Provencal know-how. The site shows how people lived at the time, their agriculture, construction technique of the huts.
To get there it takes a narrow road lined with walls - prefiguring the discovery of the village - and oaks.
Ten years were needed to restore these cabins originally built with 10 to 15 centimeters thick flat stones. The bories are built without foundations, simply mounted on a leveled ground, without mortar, on the basis of false corbelled vault. The stones are then laid flat on a slope to the outside to drain rainwater. The Bories village consists of seven groups of cabins, each with a specific function : habitat, sheep, reserve, sties for swine, silkworm, wine tanks and crushers and goat. The bories housing, benefit from some adjustments : the floor is covered with tiles, the interior walls are coated with lime to prevent drafts. The existence of this village shows that, apart from using the Borie, as temporary housing or for agricultural or pastoral, we could also find a social and economic organization.
However, its date is approximate. If the origin of bories back to the Bronze Age, several assumptions were made: built in the seventh, or the fifteenth century or, most likely, an ancient occupation of the site, modified and refurbished over time.
This unusual place is a must in the region of Vaucluse. Open every day from 9am to dusk.
The visit lasts about 30 minutes.
