Description
Jewel of the Savoy , the Lac du Bourget is the largest lake in France and is 18 km long. Born 19,000 years ago when the glaciers melted, the Lac du Bourget is a true inland sea which is filled with the surrounding rivers and streams. It is the largest natural lake of glacial origin in France.
Its area is 44.5 km ² and it is bordered by the last part of the Jura: on the west coast, the chain of Thorn which drops sharply into the lake; on the eastern coast, the inhabited mountains of Cessens, Chambotte, Corsuet and Tresserve Hill.
The spa and nautical resort Aix-les-Bains occupies part of the basin and is also the largest port in France in inland water.
Surrounded by mountains, Lake Bourget offers a romantic ambience to enjoy the pleasures of water sports and beach in a 24 °C water all summer. Enjoy the activities offered by the lake: swimming, sailing, water skiing ...
The ecosystem of Lake Bourget has been preserved: nature is still wild and wildlife can flourish in large areas. As such, the lake is a major component of French nature. The lake is home to many species of birds and fishes, and has become a resting place for migratory birds. We can see the mallard, the moorhen, the mute swan, coot, tufted duck, the little bittern, the avocet, goosander ... The mild weather also allow some Mediterranean plants to grow : the Montpellier maple, fig, boxwood, maple with snowball leaves, pubescent oak and hair of Venus (small ferns). As to the cliffs around the lake, they provide shelter for large raptors such as the black kite, peregrine falcon and the eagle owl.
