The castle of Saumur is located in the department of Maine-et-Loire to the confluence of the Loire and Thouet. It has been classified as historical monuments since 1964.

Chateau de Saumur, a medieval castle
The first building on the hill of Saumur was built in the 10th century. It corresponds to a massive dungeon made to watch the waterway positioned below. The tower belonged sequentially to Foulque Nerra, Earl of Anjou and his descendants the Plantagenets before going under the control of the crown of France under Philip Augustus.
With St. Louis, the dungeon had four towers placed at the four cardinal points. Replaced by octagonal towers, the old towers are still visible today. Figure of the medieval castle, improvements were built for comfort.
In the 16th century, the Italian architect Bartolomeo committed by Duplessis-Mornay, close to Henri IV, carried out the defense of the castle. A century before Vauban, he used a modern star map. Stronghold of Protestantism, the castle of Saumur and the city of Saumur attracted many travelers.
Paradoxically, the calm and religious tolerance restored, the castle of Saumur lost its importance. In 1745, he became a prison and then in 1810, a state prison. Then the castle was abandoned by the military and was transformed into an arsenal until 1890. Meanwhile, the building became an historic monument in 1862.
In 1906, the city bought the castle of Saumur to house in 1912 extensive collections representing the period from late antiquity to the early 19th century. World history of riding was documented by the Museum of the Horse highly visited, with 1500 different pieces.

The castle of Saumur, a successful restoration
The restoration of the castle allowed it to regain its former glory. From dormer windows to the magnificent stone lace hats, ornate fireplaces, undoubtedly recall the very rich hours of the Duc de Berry.
More recently in April 2001, part of the north wall collapsed causing some damage to the houses below. The castle of Saumur therefore needed a site stabilization to avoid another incident.
Other acts of restoring were made to value the eastern outskirts that have been remodeled as well as the bastions of earth to hide the tunnel. On the bastions were planted vineyards and grassy slopes
The castle of Saumur is naturally part of the castles of the Loire Valley.
It complements the range offered by the tourist town of Saumur and its immediate area around the horse world.
A Museum of Decorative Arts offers various ancient works of art: Limoges enamel, wood and alabaster sculptures, paintings, tapestries, pottery and porcelain. Some tapestries are from the 15th and 16th centuries, and tell stories about hunting with hounds.
Museums, theme parks, rides over the Loire, churches, monasteries, archaeological sites, etc.. are all elements that constitute a magnificant visit for the lovers of cultural, historical or culinary tourism.
