The chateau of Chaumont-sur-Loire is located on the banks of the Loire Valley between the towns of Amboise and Blois. Open all year, it overlooks the river from its feudal and Renaissance aspect. It is on the list of historical monuments since 1840.
Chateau de Chaumont-sur-Loire, in the heart of the chateaux of the Loire
The chateau of Chaumont-sur-Loire is a fortress in the 10th century. Eudes I, Count of Blois, erected it to protect the area from attacks by his rival, Count of Anjou. With different alliances, the fortress was constantly reinforced and belonged to the Amboise family for five centuries.
In 1455, Louis XI burned the castle to punish Pierre d'Amboise for his anti-royalist connivance with the League of Public Good. His descendants, including Charles II d'Amboise de Chaumont, rebuilt the building giving it a Renaissance style while maintaining the historical aspect.
In 1559, Catherine de Medici, who became owner of the premises in 1550 offered it to her rival Diane de Poitiers in exchange for the Château de Chenonceau.
From owner to owner, the castle regained its splendor in 1700 with the Duke of Beauvilliers. He also hosted the visit of the Count of Anjou, who went to Spain to win the throne.
In 1750, the chateau of Chaumont-sur-Loire is a factory specializing in ceramic production. In 1810, it hosted a famous resident : Madame de Stael. After its sale to Mr. Etchegoyen, the castle was transformed into a farm.
Château de Chaumont-sur-Loire, the jewel of the Broglie family
The site restoration began in the mid 19th century with the Earl of Aramon then via Mary Say, Amedee de Broglie's wife. They built sumptuous stables and a landscaped park of English type. The architect Paul-Ernest Sanson had the opportunity to manage the entire project. His choice fell on a mix of bricks and stones.
The stables are the real gems and are perfectly representative of the site and the fortunes of the aristocracy in the late 19th century. Recognized throughout Europe, they even had the opportunity to benefit from the electric arc light as the Hotel de Paris or the Opera Garnier.
The chateau of Chaumont-sur-Loire has led the family Broglie a golden age of nearly forty years. Lavish parties, grand ceremonies will echo throughout the European aristocracy. A reversal of fortune rushed the resale of the castle by de Broglie in 1938 just before World War II. The chateau of Chaumont-sur-Loire is therefore a historical monument.
Today, the castle and the International Conservatory of parks and gardens are unified to form the Domaine de Chaumont-sur-Loire. A cultural program of cooperation has been established to enhance the two exceptional sites.
In the heart of Touraine and castles of the Loire, Chaumont-sur-Loire offers visitors a multitude of possibilities: horse riding, forest walks, privileged observation points, beautiful gardens, etc.. The castle even has its magical nights with candlelight and organized lights in the park created by Erik Samakh.
