In southern France, deep in the arid landscape is the Navacelles Corrie, an exceptioanl cultural heritage.
The Cirque de Navacelles is the result of a natural transformation. Over the centuries, the Vis river has gradually carved the rock, creating the most spectacular scenery. One can discover a huge meander, surrounded by steep cliffs.
Its village has several old houses, dating from the 10th century and lies near the Vis river. They have the particularity to be 325 meters deeper than the Causses des Blandas and the Barzac plateau.
The history of the vast plain, known as Le Causse Blandas, is a gradual lifting over the centuries. The following beautiful transformation had been observed by the Neolithics : the river Vis vanishing 300 meters down through an extraordinary waterfall.
A pyramid-shaped stone hill appeared. The hamlet Navacelles was born from this artistic creation, on the bottom of a corrie whose shape and architecture make it a picturesque setting.
One can discover the presence of settlements in these rocky areas, a fabulous show which is visited annually by 300,000 visitors.
These hamlets are divided into two towns, Saint-Maurice Navacelles, located in the Herault, and Blandas located in the Gard. A little over 20 people live there all year, then those who come to work in various small shops in the village.
The Cirque de Navacelles is popular in the department of Herault.
One can discover 300 meters high gorges which are located between the plateau of Blandas in the Gard and the Larzac in the Herault. Then near the village of Navacelles, the river cascades through the ruins dating back over 6000 years.
To have the best view on the Cirque de Navacelles, you need to go on the top of the Causse de Blandas : there you will discover the shape of the Vis canyon in all its glory.
Many tourist attractions such as caves of the "Demoiselles" or the caves of Clamouse, the Gorges of Herault, the village of Saint Guilhem, Le Desert, are located nearby.
