Pour protéger le Comté de Nice des envahisseurs, le Duc de Savoie fait bâtir au XVIème siècle la Citadelle, les forts satellites du Mont-Alban et de Saint-Hospice ainsi que le port de la Darse où sont stationnées les galères.

Ces constructions, confiées à des ingénieurs italiens, préfigurent un nouveau type de fortifications bastionnées : on utilise la poudre dans la citadelle, ce qui est une grande innovation à cette époque.

Aujourd'hui, ce remarquable ensemble de 3 hectares est classé parmi les Monuments Historiques et abrite l'Hôtel de Ville et les Musées Volti, Goetz-Boumeester ainsi que la Collection Roux.
