Located in the Bruche Valley, in the town of Niederhaslach stands a masterpiece of Alsatian Gothic art, the Niederhaslach collegiate .

The Niederhaslach Collegiate owes its foundation to St. Florent, a sixth-century hermit who settled in the Hasel valley and built a chapel. Considered the patron saint of pets, Saint-Florent was the seventh bishop of Strasbourg. In 810 the Abbey received many donations and the body of Saint-Florent was transferred at the request of Rachio, bishop of Strasbourg. From that time, there is still a part of the chorus in which lie the remains of Saint-Florent.

In 1274, the construction of the collegiate began at the instigation of the canons that have replaced the Benedictines. On June 2, 1287, the church burned. Only the chorus remained.

The reconstruction was launched in 1300 and was led by Gerlach Steinbach, Master Erwin's son, famous architect of the Strasbourg Cathedral. History records that Gerlach Steinbach died on the site when he fell off the scaffolding. The construction of the collegiate was completed in 1385.

In 1525, during the Peasants' War, the monastery was looted. It was burned in 1633 by the Swedes during the Thirty Years War. In 1744, the Pandours, Hungarian mercenaries, stayed in the church and made a slaughterhouse. From 1853 to 1887, led by the curate Kramer, and under the plans of architect Boeswilwald, a big restoration was made.

In 1846, the church was listed as a historical monument. After the Strasbourg Cathedral, it is home to the largest collection of original medieval stained glass windows in the region. It has a magnificent facade and the sculptures of its great door depict the life of Saint-Florent. The building also contains a fourteenth-century Holy Sepulchre, and the tomb of Gerlach. The gilded copper reliquary was made by Jacques Fajard in 1716 and restored in 1857 by Auguste Laroche.

Every year in early November, an annual pilgrimage celebrates Saint-Florent .
