Description

Green lung of the Ile-de-France, the forest of Fontainebleau, extends over 20,000 hectares, and offers a rich variety of landscapes.

Located just one hour from Paris, the Fontainebleau forest, formerly known as Bière forest became royal forest in the eleventh century. From 1528, François I transformed it in a hunting with hounds area. At the time of Louis XIV, less than 20% of the area was forested. A first wave of plantations was then initiated by Colbert in 1664. Plantations were carried on until the eighteenth century.

Based on a 35 million-year-old sandy layer, the forest of Fontainebleau offers an exceptional diversity. Landscapes and landforms are very diverse and marked by the presence of sandstone rocks. In this regard, it has been ranked "World Biosphere Reserve" since 1998 : 5,000 plant and 6,600 animal species can be found there. A flora and fauna which attract many visitors. Visitors can enjoy a relaxing place and over 300 km of marked hiking trails, open to riders, mountain bikers, joggers, skaters... 150 marked trails are also suitable for climbing enthusiasts who climb on sandstone rocks. The forest will also unveiled from the top of the trees on a journey in acrobranch.
