The allinges castles |
Description
On the hills above Lake Geneva, built 200 meters above the village of Allinges, in Haute-Savoie, two ruins of separate castles face each other : Chateau Vieux, which belonged to the Barons Faucigny and dominates Chateau Neuf, the largest, owned by the Counts of Savoy (XII century ). These castles are separated by 150 meters, and each of their enclosures includes a village. Chateau-Vieux was built by the Burgundians. Under Rudolf II, king of the second kingdom of Burgundy, this site grew, and a new castle appeared in the southwest : Chateau Neuf. Visit Chateau-Vieux and Chateau Neuf, is like traveling through time: the Middle Ages. A time of battles, feuds, and wars. Indeed, for three centuries, the kings of Burgundy, the lordship of Faucigny on one hand, the Counts of Savoy on the other, fought. They competed in multiple destructive wars between 1272 and 1536. The Treaty of Paris ended the devastating conflict in the Chablais. It conceded definitely Chateau-Vieux to the Counts of Savoy. Abandoned and destroyed during the centuries, Chateau-Vieux keeps, at the heart of its fortifications, a dense and turbulent history. This place was also used as a residence by Saint-François de Sales during his mission of evangelization of this region between 1594 and 1598, after it was taken to the Genevan and Bernese Protestants by the Duke of Savoy. Even today, the place is an important place of pilgrimage. The eleventh-century Romanesque chapel of the Château-Neuf houses the oldest fresco in Savoy, listed historical monument. Today it is possible to visit these ruins which benefit from an exceptional view: you can admire Lake of Geneva, the Dent, the French and Swiss Jura. Author : Bérengère©
