Description

The ruins of the castle of the village of St. Agnes are on the rocky outcrop above the village at an altitude of almost 800m.
The village of St. Agnes was built in the 12th century at this site to protect itself from pirates. The castle was built in 1158. He belonged at that time to the Earl of Ventimiglia. It was then sold to the Comte de Provence, Henri d'Anjou.
The castle belonged to the county of Savoy from 1388 but had been largely destroyed in 1694 by order of Louis XIV.

Because of access difficulties and lack of water, the village was moved lower in the 15th century, the villagers carrying with them the majority of stones.
Excavations were undertaken by the Society for Art and History of Menton and the association " les Peintres du Soleil" from 1993.
In the ruins were discovered ceramics and musical instruments. This helped to get an idea of ​​the life led by villagers in the Middle Ages : they had a vegetable garden, grew wheat and raised sheep. Life was very tough and life expectancy did not exceed 35 years.

The association "les Peintres du Soleil" has also created a garden in the medieval ruins. It is a peaceful place conducive to meditation and napping. The views are spectacular : views of the bay of Menton as well as views of the mountains. 5 or 6 times a month, you can see Corsica.
