Le musée d'Auch a été fondé par un arrêté du directoire du département du Gers le 16 décembre 1793. Les collections, constituées à partir de saisies révolutionnaires, étaient essentiellement composées de tableaux. Les objets du musée archéologique de la Société historique de Gascogne sont venus les compléter à la fin du XIXème siècle. La collection d'ethnographie gasconne a été constituée à partir de 1948.

le musée est installé dans l'ancien couvent des jacobins (XVIIe siècle) avec l'église attenante (non occupée par le musée actuellement).
