Fondé en 1968, sur l'initiative de l'Association des arts et traditions populaires en Haute-loire (élèves de lycée agricole, jeunes, population rurale, artistes, écrivains, pouvoirs publics, et sous le patronnage d'André Malraux, dans le but de redonner vie à Lavaudieu (60 habitants) et à ses richesses patrimoniales.
