La découverte en 1957 d'un lot d'amphore italiques attira l'attention sur le site archéologique de Châteaumeillant, l'oppidium gaulois puis romain de Médiolanum. Devant l'abondance du matériel recueilli , le dépôt de fouilles présenté dans une salle de la mairie fût transféré, dans le bâtiment actuel en 1975.
