Aux collections de M Despruneaux consacrées à George Sand, léguées à la ville en 1966, vinrent s'ajouter les collections de l'ancien musée municipal créé en 1876, une collection d'ornothologie léguée par le Général de Beaufort, constituée par les Ballion, père et fils.

Architecture
L'ancien château édifié à partir de 1424 par Guy III de Chauvigny, qui appartint à Henri de Bourbon, prince de Condé au XVIIe, fût acquis en 1937 par le collectionneur M Despruneaux qui le remit en état pour installer ses collections et en faire don à la ville en 1966.
