Le musée a été créé en 1938. Il retrace l'histoire de Phalsbourg à travers écrits, uniformes, armes. Il présente également les auteurs Erckmann et Chatrian dont les romans populaires (L'Ami Fritz, Le conscrit de 1813 ..) ont eu un écho national et international.
