A partir de dons et legs, les collections du musée sont typiques du domaine des beaux-arts au XIXème siècle : archéologie, sculpture, peinture, paysages et portraits, autour de l'oeuvre de Paul Baudry. Dès 1983, une autre collection se constitue d'oeuvres utilisant le medium photographique. La collection devient internationale.

Le musée a été édifié dans le centre-ville, derrière l'hôtel de ville, par l'architecte Boudaud, en 1880.

Main interests - Musée municipal

Parmi les peintures du XIXéme siècle, les paysages proches de l'Ecole de Barbizon abondent, ainsi que les portraits plus académiques. Pour la collection contemporaine, Land-Art, art corporel, performance, fictions photographiques retracent les grands mouvements des années 1980 à aujourd'hui.
