Créé en 1937 à la suit d'un don consenti par Madame Carré, veuve du peintre Raoul Carré, né à Montmorillon en 1868, le musée s'enrichit ensuite des collections de préhistoire du Petit séminaire de Montmorillon et s'installe dans les locaux de la Maison Dieu

Le musée occupe l'espace que forment la Granges des Dîmes et l'ancien couvent de la Maison-Dieu (XVIIIe) siècle et sa tour de fortification (XIVe-XVe siècles).

Peinture régionale des XIXe et XXe siècles, s'articulant avec des documents et collections relatifs à l'histoire locale. Outillage lithique provenant de Monson, de la commune de Journet et de Saint-Pierre de Maillé. Débris de faune. Objets divers en bronze et en fer. Objets du sanctuaire romain de Masamas de la commune de Saint-Léomer.
