Le Message Biblique (17 tableaux de 1962 à 1967), toutes les oeuvres préparatoires ainsi que la série de gouaches pour la Bible (1930-1932) constituent les deux donations de Marc et Valentina Chagall de 1967 à 1972, qui ont permis l'ouverture du musée en 1973. Les collections ont été complétées par les oeuvres bibliques de la dation en 1987. Une mosaîque, une tapisserie et plusieurs vitraux de Chagall montrent l'étendue de sa maîtrise technique.
