Issu d'un musée universitaire, le muséum est installé depuis 1959 dans la citadelle de Vauban achétée par la ville après la deuxième Guerre Mondiale.Le musée est composé de trois départements; le vivant, illustré par le parc zoologique, l'insectarium et l'aquarium, l'explication du vivant , par des présentation de collections miniaturisées ou ethnologiques, et l'environnement du vivant par une présentaiton météorologique (station à reception satellite) et astronautique (planétarium).
