Description
Having served the people for two millennia, whether for the delivery of water or for your viewing pleasure, the Pont du Gard is listed as World Heritage by UNESCO. It is located about twenty kilometers from Nîmes in the Gard.
At the confluence of two branches of Gard, the bridge was built in the first century by the Romans, knowing that it is the visible part of a long aqueduct nearly 50 miles. It is no longer in use since the ninth century because of silt deposits.
Composed of 3 levels, the Pont du Gard is neither more nor less, one of the masterpieces of the Roman civilization. 275 meters long and nearly 50 meters high. Its construction dates back to the first century, is worthy of the greatest existing buildings. The quarries which had directly provided the stones of the Pont du Gard can also be visited on the left side of the building. In early 2000, major renovations have been made to develop the site.
The 3 arches make it a wonderful and almost romantic beauty, especially with the current illumination. Too bad we still do not know the name of the architect!
It is one of the most visited French monuments with nearly 1.5 million visitors each year. It is also the ideal setting in which many events are organized such as the "Circus Bridge" with acrobatic performances, "La garrigue en fête" celebrating the many numbered stones that made up the Pont du Gard or "Le rendez-vous de la rivière", which allows tourists to swim safely with a view on the bridge.
You stop over on the Pont du Gard on your way to the truffle market of Uzes, strolling along the beautiful green water, or by staying in traditional houses nearby!
In high season, the Pont du Gard is open daily. It will cost 10 to 15 euros for 5 people depending on the season to explore the entire site. Namely the bridge, an aqueduct, the outdoor runs, the temporary exhibitions or the marked trails for walks. A play area will also allow children to discover the Gallo-Roman.
Restaurants, shops and a museum may also be found in the vicinity.
This natural environment also welcomes fans of canoeing, kayaking, biking and swimming.
Enjoy it because it is a great place where, at sunset, it will no longer be architecture but magic!
