The highest village in Europe, "where the rooster pecks at the stars," St Veran, is a 2040 meters high unusual village in the heart of the Queyras regional park.

Ranked among the "Most Beautiful Villages of France", Saint-Veran stretch out on more than 1 km, fully exposed to the south. This is why it is sometimes also called "The Travers". Most of the hamlet of Raux was destroyed by fire in 1882. Therefore, the present village, still divided into different hamlets, has been designed to withstand fires. Each hamlet has its fountain, a cross and several sundials.

The village has preserved its heritage and maintains its original architecture and, most of the chalets of the village date from the eighteenth century and have a unique architecture, peculiar to the region of Queyras. The houses consist of three parts : the top is a barn whose walls are made of larch and whose exposed part is opened to the south balcony. In the center is Le Caset, the part of the house with the kitchen, bedrooms and reserves. The lowest part, is the stable where the animals and sometimes men lived.

St Veran is fortunate enough to benefit both from sunshine over 300 days a year and from weighty snow in winter, allowing it to be a ski resort in winter and a green resort in summer.

In any season you can visit the village church which is registered in the listed historical monuments. Its facade hides a statue of a lion holding a child between its legs while inside are housed statues and a carved wood creche, made by the inhabitants of Saint-Veran in the first half of the twentieth century.

Several chapels can be visited during the summer (only open one day a week, check with the tourist office).

Finally, the village has a small peasant life in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries museum located in one of the oldest houses in the village which are called "fustes".
