Description

Semi elliptical shaped Gallo Roman vestige, the archaeological site of Grand is one of the most prestigious temples of Gaul, located 10 kilometers from Neufchâteau. This shrine is dedicated to Apollo Grannus, god of healing and oracular.
Ancient texts confirmed its reputation by mentioning that famous visitors came to visit the place. Illustrious Emperor Caracalla came in 213 AD in order to heal his "body and soul". In 309, Constantine received from Apollo the promise of thirty years of happiness.

Amphitheatre: it is 148 meters wide and, in antiquity, had a capacity to accommodate 17,000 spectators. It is among the ten largest amphitheaters in the Roman world.

Mosaic released in 1883 by Felix Voulott, curator of the Musée des Vosges département, pave the floor of the Grand Basilica on a ​​232 m² area. It is organized around a central motif, called emblema which could be a scene of Phasme from Menander.

Four tablets of elephant ivory, forming two diptychs were found at the bottom of a well in 1967 and 1968. They testify to the Egyptian tradition, and were reserved for the astrological consultation to find out fate or advice, protection against disease and healing. The two diptychs are preserved, one at the County Museum of Epinal in the Vosges, the other at the Museum of National Antiquities in Saint-Germain-en-Laye.
