The black rocks viaduct |

Description
Located in the heart of the Corrèze, the Black Rocks viaduct is certainly the most remarkable work of the old railway line Tulle-Ussel. The bridge was built in the early twentieth century, to link the villages Lapleau and Soursac, straddling the Luzège river.
To answer the willingness to cross the Luzège gorge, two projects were proposed. The engineer Albert Gisclard from Roads and Bridges was chosen due to its idea of building a suspension bridge.
Consisting of two pylons which holds the shrouds supporting the deck, the bridge is 92 meters above the river. The suspension bridge is solidly connected to the ground through semicircular galleries that insert cables directly into the natural rock. The deck consists of 14 elements ranging in size from 7.4 to 11.5 meters for a total length of 158 meters.
The construction of the Black Rocks viaduct began in 1911 and the construction work began simultaneously in the locality of "Rochers Noirs" near Lapleau and in "Roche Taillade" near Soursac. It was opened in 1913 by President Raymond Poincare and was used until 1959 by the "Transcorrézien", a picturesque steam tramway which linked Tulle to Ussel.
On December 31st, 1959, the railway activity of the Black Rocks viaduct ended in favor of the D89 secondary road traffic. Traffic lights were then placed on both sides of the bridge because there was only one lane.
In 1983, car traffic was also stopped, and the viaduct stayed open only to pedestrians. To protect this remarkable place, the viaduct was listed as a historical monument in December 2000. Restoration and development projects have also been studied.
