In the heart of the old city on the Place de la Mairie, the Chapel of Mercy was built in the mid seventeenth century in a baroque style. The Chapel of Mercy of Monaco is the property of the Brotherhood of Black Penitents. The chapel retains some masterpieces as a Christ carved in the woods by the Monegasque François-Joseph Bosio, official sculptor of the Emperor Napoleon I and an altar in polychrome marble. The interior of the chapel contains frescoes (1953) representing the Assumption of the Virgin and the famous charitable acts. To mark the 350th anniversary the interior has been restored by the City Council. A fine collection of paintings adorn the walls of the chapel as "deliverance of souls from purgatory" where local saints are represented. In short, the Chapel of Mercy is the perfect place to enrich its own culture in general art, visit a baroque building significant and to meditate in peace and tranquillity.
