Overlooking the village of Vogue, which is ranked among the most beautiful villages in France, the Château de Vogue is a magnificent building dating from the XII century, in a perfect state of preservation.

This medieval fortress was built under the will of Raymond, the first of Vogue, in the twelfth century. In the fourteenth century, the castle was owned by the De La Gorce family. The four towers were added at that time. Later, the family took possession of the castle Vogüé (XVIth century). They refurbished the castle in a Renaissance style and made the hanging gardens in the moat that had been filled.

The Vogüé family abandoned the fort in the eighteenth century. It was then sold as national property during the French Revolution and later bought by Léonce de Vogue in 1840. This man installed a school, run by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Aubenas.

Although the school has been closed since 1960, the castle is still today the property of the Vogue family. The castle has been used by the association Ardèche Living since 1971. The castle was graded as listed monuments in 1969.

You may visit the different parts of the castle :

• The Hanging Garden : built at the request of Melchior de Vogue, these gardens are located where used to be the moat. The Hanging Garden, also known as "Jardin de la Marquise" offers a superb view over the village and the landscape of the Ardeche.


• The inner courtyard : the courtyard can be reached after passing the archway of the castle. From there, you have access to the various rooms on the ground floor and may discover the door dating from the seventeenth century and the grand staircase.


• The Hall of States : it is the largest room in the castle. It hosted numerous meetings and the large canvas in it represents the assembly of the Estates General of Languedoc in 1704.


• The room Vogüé : in the room, you can find the whole genealogy of the Vogue family.


• The Guard Room : a vaulted room with exposed stone.


• The dungeon : the dungeon and the kitchen are the oldest parts of the castle. They date from the twelfth century.

From 1 July to 18 September: daily from 10:00am to 19:00pm ;
From September 19 to November 1st: Wednesday to Sunday from 10:30am to 12:30am and 14:00pm to 18:00pm;
