The Millau Viaduct is a masterpiece of architecture, which has no fewer than five world records including the highest road bridge in the world (270 meters high at its highest point above the ground). It is also a masterpiece of technology, as the most advanced techniques were used to design it. The bridge had to get through the 2400 meters of the valley while having a height of 270 meters and being able to withstand winds up to 200 km/h.

The construction of this unique bridge was part of the project of implementation of the A75 motorway between Clermont-Ferrand and Béziers. The viaduct was the missing link of the project. In 1987, the route of the A75 is set. How the viaduct will be built is still to be decided. In 1996, the decision is made : Michel Virlogeux's project is selected, a cable-stayed bridge that integrates perfectly into the landscape of the Aveyron.

The various stages of construction of the viaduct lasted only three years from December 2001 to December 2004 and run smoothly.

The construction of the Millau Viaduct has allowed the surrounding region to benefit from a new impetus. The first effect was an influx of tourists in and around the viaduct. Even during its construction, 500,000 people came only to admire it! Today, the influx of tourists over the viaduct (which is prohibited for pedestrians) and on the Brocuéjouls Motorway Services on the A75 motorway (which was redesigned to have a view on the viaduc) but also around surrounding towns and villages, is remarkable.

Economically, the viaduct has a very positive effect. It helped to the creation of two business parks and caused numerous requests for corporate relocations.

To help you discover the Millau Viaduct, tours have been implemented. They are held at the Explorers Garden, outside to let you see the bridge, over a 6000 m² area. You can then go to the panoramic viewpoint which offers incredible views on the viaduct. You can also get inside the pier 2, recreated full-scale.
