Tourist information:
Aix-en-Provence is a city of art, water and culture. We visit it for its history, its beautiful buildings dating from the seventeenth century, but also for its dozens of fountains, shady paths, cathedral Saint-Sauveur, or for its International Opera Festival.
While striving to preserve and enhance its heritage, Aix-en-Provence, however, is very dynamic especially in the area of the living culture with the annual organization of the International Festival of Lyric Art.
When you visit Aix-en-Provence, you necessarily pass through the famous Cours Mirabeau, the main artery of the city. The legendary street of Aix was pierced in the seventeenth century and was quickly adorned with several fountains and numerous trees. It is a leafy area, where one appreciates a break in the shade of tall trees or on the terrace of a cafe. A walk along the Cours Mirabeau allows us to discover the beautiful buildings that border it.
The Mazarin district is also worth visiting. Along the streets, you will discover beautiful mansions, built mostly between the seventeenth and eighteenth century. They are symbols of a time when the city was very prosperous, thanks to King Louis XIV, who made her a "courtesan city".
Aix-en-Provence had long been a spa town. It was then known as "Aquae Sextia". Thanks to this ancient activity, the city is now dotted by dozens of fountains with the oldest dating from the fifteenth century!
The Cathedral of St. Sauveur is an architectural gem. It is the result of a mixture of several styles: Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque.
