Deshaies Tourism - Guadeloupe

Tourist information:

Deshaies, small town on the Côte Sous le Vent is a haven of peace which opened in upmarket tourism after having long suffered from high isolation. Nestled north of a huge forest, Deshaies offers visitors a wide range of territory: sandy beach, mountains, rivers, creeks ...

History :
The history of Deshaies is marked by its difference from the rest of the Guadeloupe island.

According to legend, the Gros Cap district, which has long included Deshaies, was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493 during his first trip. He even anchored in the bay to replenish the boat in fresh water. At the same time, the place served as a shelter to many pirates and privateers.

In the seventeenth century the first settlers moved to the northern boundary of the current town. During the years that followed, a chapel and Mr. Potherie's home were built there.

The activity related to the cultivation of sugar cane made big money for Mr. de la Potherie's plantation. However, this lasted only until 1696 because of too many looting.

In 1722, the town took the name of Gros Morne Area, consisting of Deshaies, Grande Anse, Ferry and le Perle. However, the small town suffers greatly from isolation, and only few families moved to live there.

1730 is the year of official recognition of the town of Deshaies.

In 1732, the bay of Deshaies is still armed with a gun battery to enable it to defend itself and a church dedicated to St. Paul and St. Peter was built in 1733.

It was not until 1957 that a road was built to connect Deshaies to nearby towns and allowed the town to grow.

The city was then opened to luxury tourism, thanks to its incredible natural heritage (its isolation had a positive effect : nature is still intact).

What to do in Deshaies :
Natural heritage is the most valuable resource of Deshaies which is why most business revolves around him.

Fishing is a traditional activity in the bay of Deshaies. It still practiced all year round in Ferry and especially from November to April for bream or august for goldfish (Eyes beef or snapper). Sport fishing is often proposed, it is very popular among thrill seekers.

The beach is of course essential. That of Grand Anse is the largest of Guadeloupe and probably one of the most beautiful. Relaxing atmosphere guaranteed!

On holiday in Deshaies, nature lovers will enjoy a walking tour of the Gros Morne, south-eastern part of the Piton de Sainte-Rose, where the fauna and flora are exceptional.
