Strolling in the city streets, you will discover Sainte-Claire square and Grenette square which are very busy at the weekend thanks to student life in Grenoble . The right bank of the river is also a very nice place, and has become over the years a small Italian neighborhood, where we can find many kinds of pizzerias which do not look alike!
The most important strengths of the city of Grenoble is undoubtedly its natural environment. Here, wherever you look, the mountains are around you. Stendhal, a native of Grenoble, had rightly said "At the end of each street, a mountain...". We take advantage of breaks in the wilderness to discover the regional nature of Vercors or Chartreuse. Hiking, mountain biking and outdoor sports are very popular. In winter, Grenoble is the starting point for the ski slopes of the Alps.
The city also has several museums that deserve to be discovered, including the Museum of Grenoble, a Museum of Fine Arts and Antiques which has remarkable and rich collections. It is considered one of the most prestigious museums in Europe. More museums in Grenoble
History of Grenoble began two thousand years ago. At that time, a Gallic village settled under the name Cularo then Gratianopolis. During the eleventh century, the town grew because the counts of Albon chose it as capital of their province : the Dauphine. In 1349, the city was sold, along with the Dauphiné, to France. Grenoble then became, over the years, a parliamentary city and a military frontier with Savoy.
The Grenoble inhabitants, who distinguished themselves during the Italian wars, the French Revolution and especially during World War II, have been elevated to "Companion of the Liberation" for their courage in the Resistance .
