Gros-morne Tourism - Martinique

Tourist information:

Located on a platform 245 meters above sea level and in a rich and green environment, Gros Morne is an important agricultural town turned to the cultivation of pineapple and sugar cane. Much of its territory is home to rainforest and tropical gardens adorned with Anthuriums, Alpinias, and Balisiers... As such, the Gros Morne is considered the green lung of Martinique.
The municipality has developed an industrial rich activity : fruit juices, jams, famous rums (Courville and Saint-Etienne)...
The Gros Morne also offers beautiful views on the Caravelle peninsula, and is an ideal destination for Nature lovers.

History
The Gros Morne got its name from its topography: the morne, 240 meters high, dominating the region, gave the village its name.

With the town Le Robert, Gros Morne originally formed a single district of Trinity before becoming a parish in 1743 and then a town in 1837.

During the French Revolution, in 1790, Gros Morne was a refuge for Royalist planters opposed to the revolt of patriotic Republicans of St. Pierre and Fort de France, and momentarily became the capital of the island.

To see / To do
Floral crops and food, creole gardens, a 19th century church, the Saint-Etienne distillery and its landscaped grounds ... Gros Morne has many places to visit.

Habitation Saint-Etienne: Built in the early nineteenth century as the "Housing Maugée", this sugar mill spread over 400 hectares from Gros Morne to St. Joseph. The estate consists of the mansion overlooking the distillery and the old shanties for the workers. Since the mid-1990s, Saint-Etienne rum is produced at the Simon distillery in Le François and then sent to the Saint-Etienne estate to be stored and put into barrels for ageing. During the visit, we discover the bottling and ageing cellars of the Saint-Etienne rum, known for 150 years... but also gardens with rare species and trees.

Notre-Dame-de-la-Visitation Church: The first construction dates from 1825. In 1839, an earthquake caused a lot of damage. It was renovated in 1883.

Gros Morne is also the starting point for many hikes in the forest: Morne des Roseaux, Trou des matelots, Trace des Jesuites, la Palourde, les Deux-Chous...

Visitors will also discover natural sites with hundreds of plant species.
