Declared only in 1969, the town of Marigot is the capital of the French part of the island of Saint-Martin. It owes its name to the numerous swamps that could be found on its territory. Having grown rapidly thanks to the culture of sugar cane, Marigot had to fill a part of the lagoon to expand. The first filling took place in 1970 and the second in 1990, which also allowed the construction of a road along the sea.

We choose Marigot and the island of St. Martin for a relaxing holiday. The waterfront offers us a pleasant walk between Marina Fort Louis and the cemetery. Shopaholics will enjoy the streets of downtown Marigot which houses the largest French and international luxury brands, all tax-free! Constructed in accordance with the traditions of the old Creole, these boutiques alongside small shops offering all kinds of products.

For those who do not spend their holidays without a bit of culture, Marigot offers to visit its Fort Louis and its museum. This highlights the first men who settled on the island, the Indians from the Orinoco basin, and the history of the island from the Spanish colonization to the present day. Everything is presented on a 200 m² space in a beautiful building built in 1789.

Fort Louis, which dates from 1789 had been used for many years to defend the port warehouses. Abandoned, it was rebuilt in the 1990s. The tour is punctuated with bilingual text panels and leads the visitor to a beautiful view of the city, the Simpson Bay lagoon and the island of Anguilla.
